CLIMATE CHANGE

Global warming is a gradual increase in the temperature of the atmosphere, generally linked to the increase of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is able to trap the ultraviolet radiations from the sun in the low atmosphere of the Earth, warming up the planet. One of the many consequences of climate change is the rising of the sea levels, which might come to completely submerge many cities in the future; at the base of the drawing, there are houses underwater. In addition, the water level is barely under the nose of the figure; we are yet to be in this position but it's not unimaginable. Now comes the surreal element of this drawing; one might say that the only solution to prevent further emission of carbon dioxide is to start growing more plants. Where would you do that if the whole ground is submerged in water? On our skin. Science says that we (and many other species) are a product of many years of natural selection and evolution; could this then happen with time? The left pupil of the figure is melting outside of the eye socket and on the right cheek there are cracks; this is to emphasise the high temperatures. The ozone layer is an important component of the atmosphere that protects us from dangerous UV radiations from the sun. In recent years there have been spottings of holes within this layer, meaning that more UV lights are able to reach us. The thin white layer on the top left corner is the destroyed ozone layer and, through it, space is reaching out to the Earth organisms. I couldn't decide what personality to assign to space, so I put all three options out there. Different people have different views of space and I wanted to represent as many as physically possible. Space is infinite and it seems to want to own everything (this is the biggest hand in the middle); space is cruel because all it needs is mere seconds to stop out a heart from beating (this is the violent hand crumbling a piece of paper on the top-side); space is breathtaking, it shines like jewels and here my mind thought of kings and queens (the last hand, on the bottom side, is in the act of being kissed).

Lastly, all the paper flying around is a sign of pollution.
